Some of you may have heard that you can take a pet onboard with you in a carry-on box. And this is infinitiely better than your beloved pet going in the hold, right? Wrong! Many animals prefer the silence and lower lighting to rest while they undergo what is surely a stressful change in environment. Additionally, if the animal is noisy or makes a smell, this can cause toublef or you during your flight.

Animals are generally transported in a part of the cargo hold that is reserved for them. Just like our cabins, it is pressurised and heated, and is situated below the passenger cabins.

Even if you do take your animal onboard with you, the box must still be large enough for your pet to stand up and turn around in.

Follow the Rules: An airline-approved shipping crate is required. For travel in the cabin, a soft-sided carrier may be used. But for travel as cargo or in the baggage area, the crate must be plastic with a metal door.

It should be big enough for the cat to sit up, turn around and lie down in. The less expensive carriers are not the safest. The higher-priced crates are made of sturdier fiberglass, rather than plastic, and have stronger doors that will not fly open. Each crate must be labeled with live animal stickers, consignee information, feeding instructions, and have two dishes attached to the door. These are federal regulations that must be met.

Provide Timely Proof: Every cat and dog needs a health certificate and proof of rabies vaccine. The Animal Welfare Act says the health certificate must be dated no more than 10 days prior to the trip. If it expires a new one will be required.

When you fly your dog overseas, or any pet for that matter, you will need a pet crate (a pet mover should be able to help) and you will need to find out about the pet regulations of the host country. Some countries are quite easy, but others, like Australia, are very strict. Most countries require inoculations and a period of quarantine – these differ from country to country. Certain dogs are banned in Australia, as are all birds. Cats to the UK are easy! – but find out what the pet travel regulations are.

While moving a pet overseas seems like a big job, it is not too difficult. The hard part is finding trusted kennels in the host country – this is important as some times your dog or cat will be kenneled up to 6 months – and you really need a good kennel. This is where a dog transport company or Animal travel Agency comes in. They have good, trusted contacts all over the world, and while they may seem expensive, in real terms it will save you hours on the phone overseas. A pet transport company will organise pet boxes, inoculations, kenneling and air tickets – they will make sure you pet is delivered and collected from the airport, and the taken to the kennels. Moving a pet overseas or when you fly dog overseas, make sure you know what you are doing - cats to uk and pet regulations and pet movers.

Animals will have to wait thirty days after the Rabies inoculation so as to build up a Titre before the blood sample is taken. Pets, therefore, will only be allowed to travel 3 months after this blood test.
Dog vaccinations will include the following -
Distemper
Parvovirus Leptosporosis
Contagious Hepatitis
Infectious Panleukopenia and
Leukose Feline are mandatory vaccinations for cats.
Every EU country requires its own health certificate.

Dog Travel to UK, Australia and New Zealand and anywhere else in the world

Moving you dog or moving pets to another country can be a stressful – add to that all the other things you need to worry about when moving overseas, you will want a pet travel company that can handle all of the red tape. Any dog travel or cat travel will need a pile of documentation. When you transport dog to foreign countries you will need to know what the policy is on pets in regards to quarantine and inoculations – some countries do not allow certain breeds at all. When moving a dog to UK the regulations have been relaxed but there are still requirements.

We are going where?

When moving pets to the United Kingdom, Australia and New Zealand you will need to know about the long quarantine time which is required for these countries. Animal Travel will be able to guide and advise you with regard to the quarantine details. We know where the best kennels are, as we visit the UK kennels ourselves every few years. If you need more information regarding quarantine contact us at Animal Travel Agencies. There are several players in the market – and as with all business, some are good and others are fly by night. There are also several pet scamming companies using pet travel companies as a front for their operations. Do some research on the companies that you plan to deal with – if you can visit the premises and make sure that they are a real business. While in some companies age does not matter – in the animal travel game it is advisable to do business with a company that has some kind of track record. They should have built up contacts in all the countries that they are sending pets to – and it takes time to build solid, trustworthy contacts and associates in foreign countries.

When boarding is needed in South Africa, we make use of only reputable, licensed boarding kennels, and mostly those which are members of the Pet Boarding Association. Animal Travel Agencies is very well known to all the embassies, removal companies and large companies who relocate their people (and pets)l to destinations around the globe. With 25 years of pet transport experience, your dog, cat, or any other pet, will be in good (and caring) hands. When you fly with you pet it is a bit easier than sending your pet by itself – but both methods need to be done properly to avoid sometimes very expensive mistakes. Even the kind of wooden box you use is regulated – the size, the shape and how it is made – it will also need to be treated to be allowed through customs on the other side. The process though, is a lot more stressful for the pet owner – dogs and cats are tougher than we think – they will be fine if you choose the right pet transport company.
